THE ANNUAL VALUE-TO-LET RATE.

To the Editor ofthe Invercargill Times. w Siß, — Many words have passed, and letters been written, regarding this great bug-bear of Southland, which might have been well spared ; and I, in thus addressing you on this subject, trust I am not encroaching too far on the space and time of your invaluable journal, and the public generally Much has been said about the "Eminent Political Economist," and much also about the " Cranky Chieftain," which would be better unsaid, but I should like to hear of one single instance of generosity from this " Chieftain," to any poor man without some object in view, and the less said by him about his generous dealings, at public meetings the better — it only casts his dye the deeper, and paints his color the more true. If he desires afc all to hold the position he never deserved, I would recommend him quietly to attend and walk up to, the duties for which he is paid, without interfering with the interests of others. He ought, at this particular juncture, to be carefn 1 indeed of his conduct ; imprudences will not now be submitted to by the Southland public. The change of government will take place — tbe good books compared — and the general government advised— then, what sensation ! echo answers — what sensation !

In concision, I think ifc shameful that so much public time and money should be wasted in advocating a course the public will not have, and that if hon. members will persist in going so greatly against fche general weal, they should bo called upon to resign positions they have shown themselves unworthy of, by making laws fco suit their own purposes, instead of those who placed them where they are, the whole affair being afc the same time in a nut-shell — " one against two hundred," I am sir, yours &c, Yebitas. December 3rd, 1862.
