We wish to draw the attention of the Town Board to the necessity of having a few lamps placed in the principal thoroughfares of the Town. By the outlay of a small sum of money, many serious accidents may be avoided. It is almost impossible to avoid, during these nights of almost winter weather, being disagreeably reminded of the numerous side-drains, many of them containing anything but crystalised water. Our attention has been more than once called to the very inadequate accommodation afforded by the present Post-office, as being unsuitable for the proper dispatch of business and convenience of the public. Notwithstanding the efficient manner in which the duties of the official staff are performed — creditable to thenr.selves, and deserving the thanks of the community — the want of a larger and more extensive building is experienced in a remarkable degree on the arrival of a mail, many persons being obliged to wait till the following day before they can have their inquiries satisfied We regret to have to report a rather seriou3 accident which occurred, to John C. M'Kay, Esq., while on his way from here to Dunedin. He had got as far as Popotunoa, where he stopped to feed his horse, and for that purpose had loosened the girths of the saddle. After the horse had been fed he proceeded on his journey, supposing the ostler had fastened the girths, lie had got through the gorge, and on turning a sharp corner, the saddle turned throwing him under the horse, when the horse stepped on him with the hind foot, cracking thiee of his ribs. He was detained at Popotunoa for a week, when he proceeded on his journey, and, we are liappy to say, ie now quitd recovered.,
We were yesterday shown, by Mr. Jamieson, of the Batik .of New South wales, a very fine sample of gold, weighing 67 025., which that gentleman had purchased from Mr. Joyce,; of the 'Nokomai.- The -gold ia of a . very coarse description, much water-worn, and apparently of very fine quality— the production of the Nokomai diggings. We. also inspected a. specimen of quartz and gold, about the size of a crown piece. The sides of the specimen were of pure white quartz, with a seam of gold about a quarter of an inch thick, cropping out at the edges, giving it the appearance of a fo-wl'9 comb. The gold very much resembles ,that obtained on the Arrow and Shotover Bivers;
