Wars and Rumoks or Wahs — The Otago Daily Times of ihe 19fh November s-ays: A gentleman who auived here a few days ago from the North Island, and who has recently had occasion to travel overland through the principal native districts South of Auckland, informs us that the colony is on the eve of another war with >he Maories. He says that a mast warlike feeling actuates the natives, and the impending struggle is freely canvassed by the various nines. Although he was personally treated very kindly, by the natives throughout his journey, yet he was given clearly to understand that they were enemies to the Government, and would suppoit the position they had taken at all cost. The natives would ap pear to have a regular system of communication between even distant tribes, as he found small isolated tribes, who were as well posted up in respect to the movements of Sir George Grey, as was our informant himself. At the Wai«ato, the na ives were in an unsettled state, and the number of midnight meetings, and the passing to and fro of messages between the different vilages, indicated anything but a pacific state of affaire. The report that Mataiauwe (ihe Maori King) had embraced Roman Catholicism is tst.ted to be incorrect, and his duskyjMajesty is alleged to be offended at the inbinuation. The Roman Catholic Missionaries aie said to have been very busy amongst the Waikatos, and by a liberal disbursement of tobacco, pipes, and other Maori luxuries, have got mo ronsiderable favor. Our informant saw one of these reverend gentlemen, a young and good looking priest, was paddled down the river, bj* a picked crew of young Maori Hebes, who made the banks echo with their laughter and voices, as they beat the water to the m«Mure of a not unmusical chaunt.
