A New Gazza Laoßa— The celebrated magpie of palaisedu, whose thieving propenii ies gave rise to the well-known drama of the " M^id and the Magpie," has just been eclipsed in the annals of crime by a bird of the same species at Breviandes, near Troyes (A'ibej. Two days since smoke was seen to issue from a hay-loft belonging to a farmer named Damoisseau, but, as plenty of help was at hand, the flames were promptly extinguished. How the fire could ltave originated was a mystery, as no oneliad been near the place. A close examination, however, showed that the incendiary vyas a tame magpie,, which had stolen a. box of lucifers from the kitchen/and had gone to amuse itself with them in the' 16ft. — "Not long since Mr. Bjidden, Ihe coffeeroaster, of Hargrave-street, purchased a quantity of chicory grovm at Muckleford. The root has proved of Excellent quality, and we shall doubtless soon be independent of foreign countries for a supply of the article. Notwithstanding the prejudice that exists against the admixture of chicory with the roasted bean, it is found that persons unaccustomed to the use of I pure coffee find it unpalatable. The English coffee-drinker can no more recognise his favorite beverage deprived of the body and colour which'chicory imparts to it, than he would the vintages of Xercs unfortified with the usual allowance of aqua vita?." i Enthusiasm for *"]xhb War. — The Portland (Maine) Advertiser complains of fifty men having " staijnped " for Canada in one night, to avoid the possibility of " being detailed or detached for the service of the Union." The' New York Fire Brigade are exempt frotfo military service, and it is stated that' applications for admission have become very numerous ; so also are the applications for employment in the fisheries.
