WELLINGTON MEETING CONCLUDES.

The Wellington Summer Meeting' was brought to a close yesterday before what was, for an "off" day a large crowd. The totalisatoi* investments, contrary to custom in other places this season, showed very little change from the last year's totals. Evidence of the good work of the handicapper was shown in the excellent racing and the close ' finishes, runaway victories being conspicuous by their absence. Favourite Misses The First.

' Vesperus had seven hundred pounds more of the public money to carry than any other horse in the Highweight Handicap, and failed to supply his backers with a dividend by half a length. Son o' Mine jumped out with the lead from Oriflamb and Tannadice, but did not long hold the premier position, Oriflamb soon assuming command with Ca.pitula*on and No Favours following closely. No Favours led into the straight from Wedding March and Capitulation. Half way down Wedding March got half a head in front of Capitulation, and stayed with the lavourite making a late run from the hunch being in third place half a length further back. Assurance By A Head.

Stormy was backed down to a short price for the Kelburn Handicap, and had to be content with fourth place. Jcmidar led from Royal Game, Kilmiss and Gardant from a good start the rest coming along in a bunch a few lengths back. Jcmidar was still in front near the turn, .but Assurance, Ivilmiss, Outfit were moving up with Stormy coming fast into the straight. Assurance and Kilmiss drew away from the bunch in the straight, and in a great finish, the former got home first by half a length, with Outfit four lengths away, third. Stormy, Jcmidar and Some Lad came home next in that order. A Bolt Prom The Blue.

The Hopeful Stakes provided a sensational dividend in Silver Coot. Public fancy did not travel very much further than High Finance who was sent out carrying nearly two thousand pounds of punters' money. Silver Coot was given hardly a thought. Visibility was very bad at the start, and It was difficult to place the leaders. In the straight, Silver Coot was leading Melissa and the favourite, Wild Pigeon and Laity. About a furlong from home Laity had moved up into third place, Melissa and Silver Coot still leading. The outsider kept on to win by four lengths from Melissa, with Laity half a length away, third, and High Finance, Chips and Priceless next. Mister Gamp Nearly Pulls It Off. Mister Gamp was the outsider ol the field of eleven runners in the Melrose Handicap, and had he found his feet sooner he would probably have got a place. Horomea was sent out first in public favour, but disappointed hi s backers by finishing with the bunch behind the placed horses. Hymill led from Black Mint, Gold Mint and Horomea out of the barrier, the rest being in a bunch close behind, with Mister Gamp lengths away, a bad last. Little change resulted In the leaders at the bottom bend, but on entering th c straight. Plack Mint had got ahead of Hymiil, and Mister Gamp with a wonderful burst of speed, had come up to the middle of the pack. Black Mint maintained his position until the jtfdge was passed, when he was two lengths ahead of Gold Mint, with Hymiil half a length back, third. Mister Gamp was n length away, fourth.

Centrepiece's Narrow Victory. Centrepiece was only sixth in the public fancy in the big race, Grand Knight being most popular with punters. Jockey T. Green was unluck? at the post in being kicked by hia mount, Inferno, this, however, not preventing him from riding what was, under the circumstances, an excellent race. The Hawk jumped out with the load from Deluge and kept his position along the back. Tn the straight, Centrepiece came with a rush followed by First Acre and kept on to win bv half a head from First Acre, with Grand Knight half a length away. The Hawk was fourth, and Inferno fifth. A Favourite At Last.

Hynanna, was backed down to a short price and merited the support accorded him in the Consolation Handicap. Civility assumed command al thc start, with Frant Rank, Hynanna, Alloway, Fresco and Mandane following in close succession. At the turn, Front Rank was in the lead, with Civility next and Hynanna, tho rest of tho field closing up. Hynanna took charge a furlong from home, and stayed two lengths ahead of Civility, with Clarinda a length and a-half further away, and Mandane fourth. Shirley Scores By Half A Length. ShiTley. Mimetic and High Pitch were in great demand for the City Handicap, the first-named getting home by a naTrow margin. The time for the six-furlongs was fast and the placed horses were were in the van for the whole distance. Shirley stayed on to win by half a length from Benzora, Booster being a similar distance away, third, and Corn Money fourth. The rest came home together. ■Crown Area Scores tn the Last. The meeting concluded with the Kaitoke Handicap, for which Bank Note was favourite. Dimmer and Lady Ideal were in front at the bottom of tho straight, whero Aston came through and got to the front. However, Crown Area finished fast and won by hall a length, with Orazone another half a length away, third, and Bank Note, fourth.
