't'r - THE ANNUAL*' REPORT. The details outlined in the annual - ‘ report were as follows: The past sea-, son has been a notable one for the i, rapid advance made by the club in regard to membership, and also in the keenness displayed by all members from the start of the season to 7 ' the end. We were able to play a number of matches with .outside clubs, and with handicap and cham- /, ■ pionship matches the members were , afforded many .chances of some good - , tennis.. In addition to these ladder 1 matches proved -to be the order of , J :the day, it being, pleasing to ,note . marked improvement made, toy -,so many of the younger players. As . the club membership increased from 33 to 66 it early became apparent • ■ that steps, would have to he taken to provide 'more playing room for members. With this object in view the committee proceeded to get the council’s consent for the use of a larger -/ playing area: After much correspondence and many committee meet- „ ’ ings (the attendance of which showed a great improvement on that of last year) the necessary permission - was received. Estimates were then . ' obtained in regard to costs, etc., and ' a, general meeting of members was , called on May 31st, at which 14 members were present, to give the committee authority to borrow £IOO from the Bank of New Zealand, and pro--1 . ceed with the work. The tender ,of G. Elsrnore, Palmerston North, for : £93 17s 6d, was accepted and it was decided to purchase “material for , , fencing and arrange the labour ourselves. The total cost of laying down - tiie new court was • £l5O 17s 6d. In ) , addition to this' it was decided to ’top-dress'the three other/ courts at a cost of £27. With:the help, of vol- > unteer labour a I’2-foot netting fence v. ‘ was erected alongside the hedge and ? old fences were repaired .by the same means. Results of inter-club games were as - follows: Otaki, played two, won two; Foxton, played two, won one, lost one; Manakau, played two, won one, lost one. The idea of playing B teams was inaugurated, and proved most successful, for by this means most of the'-members of the cub ■ were able to take part m all matches. The statement of receipts and expenditure showed a debit balance of £lol' 0s Id, for which the construction 'of the new court was largely responsible, as will be seen from a survey of the following figures:— Receipts—Balance at Bank of Australasia at 1/9/25 was £3l 11s 4d, subscriptions £95 14s, entrance lees to competitions £3 10s, interest Atoraham and Williams Bs, balance £lOl Os Id, total of £232 3s sd. Expenditure.— Repairs 'and maintenance of [pavilion and grounds £3O 14s 6d, trophies £5 17s, rent £- 2s, tennis net and balls £8 2s lOd, laying down of new court and top-dressing old courts £ll6 9s 6d, piping foi fence £8 13s lOd, labour in erecting fence £l2, timber and posts for fence £1 13s 9d, sundry other expenditure £46 10s, total £232 3s sd. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. GENERAL. Appreciative reference to the worx of the secretary (Mr K. Biss) _ was made by the chairman, who said tne club had profited much through the interest and energy displayed by him, while another member consid- ! ered the secretary was the “live I wire’’ of the whole thing. The treasurer (Mr P. H.
