TENNIS SEASON OPENS.

After having been postponed from last week owing to wet weather, the Shannon Tennis Club officially opened its season on their courts in Vance Street, on Wednesday afternoon, in ■tiie presence of a large number of members and (heir friends, visitors also being present from the Levin and Mangaore Clubs. Although the weather was dull in. the early part, j the sun made its appearance later and a most pleasant aifternoon was ' spent. During the afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies and much I appreciated. Mr E. T. Moody, president of the Club, in .opening the courts, stated that the lateness in opening the season had been brought about by the Jong spell of wet weather and the fact that the courts had only recently been top-dressed. In extending a welcome to all he wished them a pleasant afternoon's sport. Last season, lie said, owing to the epidemic, the Club had been unable to carry out its programme of matches, but he hoped timt this would be remedied this season. There were great benefits to be igained by visiting other Clubs, they had a. strong Club and it was the duty .of. all to foster the Club spirit by pulling together for the common good. The prospects for 1 the ensuing season were bright. To encourage first year lady players Mr Howard Andrew had kindly donated two trophies for the best two players. After thanking the ladies for providing- refreshments during the past season, he then called on Mrs Laurvig, one of the oldest members of the iClub, (who he said, had rendered •great assistance to. it since its inception, to play the first ball over the net,, after which he declared tire, season open.
