REFORM SWEEPS DOMINION

GREAT GOVERNMENT VICTORY MANY SEATS WON FROM OPPONENTS. The election of the. twenty-second Parliament of the Dominion was responsible yesterday for the most dramatic surprise that has taken place in .the political history of the country since the day when the date Mr Seddon swept the country from end to end. The general opinion was that tlie old parties would be returned very much on the same basis as in the past, but in the event, the Reform Party made substantial gains from both Labour and National ranks. The result will be that the Reform Government is confirmed in' office with a Parliamentary following variously estimated at from 50 to 57 members, while its two opponents barely reach double figures each. The parties in opposition have thus received a heavy rebuff, while the Government has scored a decisive and overwhelming •victory. • The general goodwill of the country. towards Reform was reflected in the electorates adjacent to. Levin and both Mr Field and Mr Linklater were given handsome majorities, testifying unmistakeably toi the hold they have on the good opinon of their constituencies. Whereas in 1922 Mr Field barely won the seat from his two opponents he was returned qu this occasion by an absolute majority of .nearly 1400 votes. Mr Linklater also greatly increased his majority on this occasion. The most outstanding feature of the returns in the North Island is the capture of the whole of the Wellington province from New Plymouth down (except Wanganui) by the Government.

The defeated Nationalists are:— Mr A. ,7. Murdoch (Marsden). Mr G. McKay (Hawkcs Bay). Mr R. Masters (Stratford). Mr S'. G. Smith (Taranaki). Mr .7. R. Corrigan JPatea). Mr 7. A. MaoPherson (Oamaru). Mr J. Edie (Ciutha). Mr P. A. de la Perelle (Awarua). In addition, thei„seats formerly held by the pseudo-liberals, L. M. lsitt (Christchurch North), and G. Witty (Riccartom) who supported the Government during the last Parliament have been won by straight-out Reformers. The Labour casualties are:— Mr L. Mcllvride (Napier). Mr A. L. Monteith (Wellington East). . Mr J. W. 'Munro (Dunedin North). iMr F. Langstone (Waimarino). Mr 7. McCombs (Lyttelton) is in a precarious position, but it is possible the large seamen’s vote will eventually keep him in his seat. Another doubtful Labour seat is that of Mr 7. O’Brien (Westland) who is leading.hts opponent, Mr T. E. Y. Seddon (Rational), by a very narrow margin. • air 7. G. Ward is hack again in Parliament as mernher for Invercargill, as is Mr J. R. Hamilton, ivho first defeated him. but lost the Awarua seat.next election to Mr P. A. de la, Perelle.
