BENZINE TINS ON THE LANDSCAPE

COUNTY COUNCIL TO TAKE DRASTIC ACTION. AGAINST UNTIDY MOTORISTS, The growing practice of dumping rubbish, and more especially empty benzine tins, on the County roadtion at the last meeting of the Horowlienua County Council. A letter was received from Mr W. M. Simcox, of Otaki, who wrote requesting the erection at the top of the old Otaki-Foxtoii Beach road, of 1 a notice prohibiting people from dumping rubbish, tins, etc., on the side of the road, and also removing soil therefrom. The attention of the Council was also drawn to the practice of dumping tins into the Waitohu creek at or near the main County road. These tins became filled with gravel, lodged in the willows and became a serious menace, because it would be soon almost impossible to use a saw in the removal of the willows. The chairman said there was a small backwater alongside the road near Te Horn. Whether it was that the lorries pulled in there to fill up, he did not know, but there were hundreds 'of tins there. The Council should take some action to prevent the depositing of tins alongside the , road at all. They were going to build very nice roads and could not have the whole landscape made unsightly by these rusty tins thrown from one end of the district to the other. This should be prohibited. If a person emptied a tin he should put it back in the car and carry it to a refuse dump. In America the nuisance was not in evidence because motorists went to garages and took up their benzine. The tin nuisance, however, was a big menace in this country. Cr. Broudbelt mougiit ie practice was absolutely wrong. Some time ago the Kairanga County Council offered £5 reward for the conviction of anyone depositing tins on the roadside. This Council should take steps to prevent it. The Engineer said loads of tins had been carted out and tipped on the

roadside aud other rubbish had also been disposed of in that way. Not so long ago a load of tins had been dumped over the Waitohu bridge. Cr. Ryder said the tins were being put down among the willows there and it was going to be very difficult to get them out. The following motion was passed: “That the Horowhenua. County Council take drastic action against any person or persons depositing empty benzine, kerosene or other empty tins or rubbish on the side of the roads or in streams or drains in the County.” Cr. Whyte said he had been ap-

1 preached to see whether the Council 1 would agree to the purchase of a I small site in the Tokomaru riding for the disposal of benzine tins, which were accumulating and becoming a nuisance.
