THE LATE HON HUIA ONSLOW.

A MOTHER'S APPRECIATION. When thie late Horn Hula Onslow died earlier in the year, a message of sympathy was sent through Sir Maui Pomare, by Mr Rere Nicholson, of Levin, to Lady Onslow, expressing the deep sorrow of the Ngatihuia tribe. Son of a former Governor of the Dominion, Huia Onslow was born in New Zealand and was formally received into the Ngatihuia tribe at a ceremony at Otaki. He always valued his association with thie tribe and in later years re-visited New Zealand and renewed his acquaintance with Otaki. His death followed upon an injury received while bathing, causing paralysis, which terminated fatally after a long illness suffered with patient and uncomplaining heroism. Mr Nicholson has now received a

grateful and gracious acknowledgment from Lady Onslow of the tribal sympathy. She writes from Cap Antibes, in tbie South of France“ Dear Friends,—Your most kind letter of sympathy in my great grief has reached me here. I am travelling, having been very ill. I do thank you Chiefs and the whole of the Ngatihuia tribe, for your letter and for its 1 expressions of grief for my dearly-loved son. Huia loved New Zealand, the land of his birth—he had always been glad and happy that lie had once more returned to it and seen you all and received all your kindness, hospitality and your affectionate remembrance of him. My consolation is that he is free once more and I feel that his courage and KTs long gallant fight, for eleven years of his short life, have not been lived in vain. I am very proud of my son, but I aim very lonely without Huia. Farewell,

dear friends. My be&t thanks for all your sympathy and kindness, to feel

that, you all sorrow with me and for Huia is a. consolation. May the great God we all worship, protect and prosper you nil; that is my sincerest wish. Always your friend. FLORENCE ONSLOW.”
