THE FESTAL FAIR.

A SUCESSFUL OPENING. The Testa! Fair, tvhich has been organised by the members of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild, was opened yesterday afternoon in the Maoriland Theatre by the Mayor (Mr Murdoch). To the visitor it is easily seen that the committee have spared no pains to make the Fair a success. The well arranged stalls are loaded with wellmade articles of wear, both for children and adults, and fancy work that will please "the eye of the most critical. At the produce stall one can procure tasty cookery, jams, preserves, etc., at a very modest cost. The sweet stall, jumble stall, and last, but not least, the village pump and baker’s oven, all tempt one to take advantage of the good things offering. The tearooms, which are on the stage, have been daintily arranged with small tables enclosed with lattice work decorated with roses. Here those who wish to refresh themselves after marketing can obtain an abundance of good things to eat and drink. Cooling drinks, ice creams and fruit salads can also be obtained. There are numerous side shows and guessing competitions, and the public are well catered for in every department. The-committee and those helping are to be complimented on the fine display they have made. During the afternoon and evening the hall was packed and the various stallholders had a* busy time. In the afternoon a baby show for children .under nine l months was held, Mrs Stanley, a visitor to Shannon, acting as judge.., There were nine entries and the judge had a difficult task as they were all bonnie children. The prize went to Valeri© Keenan.

During the evening a large number of competitions were held, the results of which win be made known this evening. Each (evening an interesting picture programme is screened. The 1 Fair will be open again ' this afternoon and evening and those desirous of securing some useful bargains, combined with the fun and amusement to be had, should not miss the opportunity of attending. The following are in charge of the various stalls: Carter and Barber; Sweets —Mesdames Minifie and Newth; Produce—• Mesdames Pettit and Newth; Jumble*— Mesdames Dalzell and Frost; Ice Cream—Mrs Spring; Bran Tubs—Mrs Green and Miss Quarrie.
