AUSTRALIAN.

Unit id Press Association —Per Elsitnc Telegraph—Copyright. Received 8.52 a.m., January 23rd. THE COMMONWEALTH.

SYDNEY, January 23.

The difficulty experienced by Mr Barton in filling the Queensland portfolio is attributed to the northern politicians looking askance at his utterances regarding the black labour question. Sir W. Lyne in a statement at Albury said ha thought the tariff should be more of an ad valorem character than protective. Mr Barton states that any such opinion is purely speculative. The Minister of Customs is not yet in a position to suggest any tariff that is likely to be finally adopted.
