Some friction has arisen over the establishment by New Zealand of a postage, the local post office threatening to surcharge letters from New /.sa.and. Mr Seddon hopes to adjust the matter before he leaves. THE WEATHER. The weather is close, and there was gieat"heat ia tho country yesterday. There are indications in Sydney to-day that a hob snap is approaching the city. THE NEWCASTLE FIRE. SYDNEY, December 31. A fire in Newcastle proved very destructive. It burned the stores and bond of D. Cohen cud Company, with its immense stock, including large quantities 'of matches and sulphur; and destroyed the buildings which were five stories high. The firemen, owing to primitive appliances, were unable to cope with the fire, and concentrated their effor's or. saving the surrounding buildings. The main building is still burning. ■ The damage is estimated at £56,000. Received 8.50 a.m., January Ist. SYDNEY,, January 1. The cause of the fire at Newcastle is a mystery. The fumes of smouldering sulphur rendered the work difficult. The seamen of the various ships in harbour rendered valuable assistance. The water supply was sadly deficient. It is understood that the contents are insured, but the amount is not stated. TRADE OF NEW SOUTH WALES. The trade statistics of the colony last year show that the total value of the trade was £41,421,000, being, an increase of £424,000 compared with the previous year. The imports increased £1,418,000, and the exports decreased £163,000. GREETINGS. 1 The “ Daily Telegraph ” publishes a message containing seasonal greetings from the New Zealand Postmaster-General.
