Increase of Cancer.
It was said some time ago that the Empress Frederick of Germany was suffering from cancer. Contradictory reports have since been published. The publicity given to the circumstances, however, have resulted in drawing attention to the fact that in Germany, as elsewhere, cancer is on the increase. The Prussian Government, with what we suppose must be called characteristic energy, have decided to institute a thorough enquiry into the increase of the disease. A commission has been appointed to conduct the investigations, and every medical man in Prussia has been furnished with a paper of questions which he is to answer in writing apd subject to the commission. The prim ci.pal points raised are whether the disease is hereditary or contagious, and whether it is connected with any particular habit, such as indulgence in alcohol, tobacco, etc.’ or due to local causes. The initial letters of the Christian and surnames of the patients, the age, profession, position, time of first symptoms, the organ first attacked, whether parents or relations have been similarly afflicted, or whether cases have occurred in the same house or neighbourhood, or if contagion or other causes are suspected, are among the questions to be answered.
