WELLINGTON, December 21. The Governor returned to Wellington from the south this morning. THE NORTHERN MAORI SEAT.

The candidates nominated for the northern Maori seat are Hone Heke, Haparata Henare Kiri, Paraia Te Whareumu, Eparaia.Uitu, Kapa- Riapo, Puhipi Poaka Parore. The election takes place on the 9th January. INQUEST. CHRISTCHURCH, December 21. At the inquest this morning on the body of Weakey, driver of a brewer’s dray, who met with a fatal accident yesterday, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The jury added a rider that they considered the road dangerous at the spot where the accident happened, and drew the attention of the Sydenham Borough Council thereto. ALLEGED BIGAMY. DUNEDIN, December 21. At the Police Court to-day, the Stipendiary Magistrate dismissed without prejudice a charge of b'gamy preferred against James Sibbald, mercer. The police explained that there were plenty of witnesses in Tasmania to support the charge, but they would not come over unless expenses were first guaranteed, while the Commissioner of Police at Hobart would not undertake that responsibility. The Magistrate said that the prosecution’, could lay another information or move for Mercer’s arrest if he attempted to leave the colony. THE ESCAPED PRISONERS. INVERCARGILL, December 21. Brookes and Heatley, escaped prisoners, were brought before Mr McCarthy, ,S.M., to-day. His Worship said there had been nothing of misconduct in accused beyond the attempt to escape and/ being found in possession of a loaded firearm, the purpose of which might have been solely to provide food. Accused, who it was stated, had used no violence, were sentenced to simple confinement without irons in a light cell for 15 days.
