THE TRANSVAAL.

The officers of the Brigade of Guards on service in South Africa are in a fair way to carry out the precept that advocates “plain living” as a panacea. Here, at any , rate, is a recipe for the delicacy known as Trekhoss a la Guerrier —a dish that seems to be a standing one amongst General Paget’s Guardsmen: —“ Take a trek ox belonging to another battalion. Kill it, if not already dead, and cut it into eight more or less equal parts. Boil these in black mud over a green wood firefruit trees are the best—for 45 minutes. Allow it to stand in a dusty place for one hour, and serve lukewarm.” It scarcely sounds altogether appetising, but a young subaltern, who has been regularly partaking of it for some months past, was heard to assure a party of friends at the Carlton one night that it .was “ distinctly distending.”
