Charge of Embezzlement.

CHRISTCHURCH, November 29,

A sensation 'was caused this morning when it became known that a charge of embezzlement had been preferred against one of the officials of the National Bank. Rumours had been circulated for some days as to defalcations at the bank, but little was definitely known until this morning, when Adam Oliver, teller at the bank, surrendered himself to the police. He was brought to the Police Court a little later, and was charged with having misappropriated moneys amounting to £1386. The police applied for a remand. Mr Kippenberger, for the accused, in applying for bail, said that nearly £4BO of the £1386 alleged to be embezzled had been returned. Theerfore the amount missing was £960. A remand was granted till Tuesday, and bail allowed prisoner in £IOO, and two sureties of £IOO each.
