Winchester Patriotic Fund.

A meeting of the committee of the Winchester Patriotic Fund was held in the Wolsely Hotel on Monday evening. There were present: —Messrs De Renzy (chairman), Major Young, W. Harrison, J. Opie, J. Scott, T. Langdon, and G. Steven, hon. sec.

The chairman reported that he had called the meeting to consider the following telegram Chairman, Patriotic Fund, Winchester—Am directed by Premier to Inform you that advice has been received from Mr Pilcher that funds at his disposal for providing comforts for our fellow-colo-nists taking part in upholding the cause the Empire in South Africa are now ex " hausted. The Premier feels sure that the desire to help those serving the Empire, as evinced by the contributions made to the various patriotic funds, will enable your committee to consider the matter in such a way as will assist Mr Pilcher to continue the work he has so ably carried out in the past, and that the generous assistance of your committee may be relied upon to that end.” —Arthur P. Douglas, Under-Secre-tary Defence. The following motion was proposed by Mr J. Opie, seconded by Mr Harrison, and carried unanimously:—“That this committee is of opinion that the funds collected in this district were intended mainly to relieve cases of need that might arise in South Canterbury, and as there are men from this district still at the seat of war, this committee considers the funds should be retained to meet cases of need that may yet arise. The immediate needs of those at the seat of war, we think, is the care of Government.” On the motion of Mr De Renzy, seconded by Mr Opie, it was resolved to appoint Mr Harrison as a trustee of the fund in place of Mr Inwood, who contemplated leaving the district.

The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, and to Mr Langdon for the use of a room.
