MR HALL-JONES AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, November 26,

Mr Hall-Jones, at the invitation of Mr Wivheford, met the leading citizens at a banquet on Saturday night. The Minister admitted that £1,700,000 more lAid been spent in the South Island than in the North Island on .public works, but an attempt had been made in'* the last ten years to balance matters. The Minister went this morning to inspect this end cf the Main Trunk Railway.

Later news) from Kawakawa states that the body of Houkamau was much knocked about. There was. a dent and a bruise over the left eye, and_ a slight cut over the left eyebrow. His private parts were broken and bruised, and bleeding profusely. There was a large bruise over tiie hip, and numerous smaller bruises on various parts of the body, and much b’ood had flowed from nose and mouth, and the face was disfigured. An inquest will be held to-day.

Imrie, lately railway stationmaster at Foxtcn, was charged at the Magistrates’ 'Court with forging four receipts, representing £74, for money received by hjm on account of file Carnarvon-Sanson, tramway, making it appear that this sum had been paid over to the Manawatu County Council, which was not the case. Ac--I,used, who was charged under the Indictable Offences Summary Jurisdiction Act of last session, pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. THE MINISTER OF LANDS. The Minister of Lands finds that he must abandon the proposed trip to Dunedin. He will leave for Nelson to-morrow, to attend the agricultural show there. SHIPMASTERS’ ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Shipmasters’ Association was held to-day. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £92. Captain Kennedy resigned the post of secretary owing to the state of his health, but agreed to hold office until a, successor is appointed. All the retiring officers were re-elected with the exception of Captain Campbell, who did not offer himself. Captains Hipgrave, Allan, Jarman, Laiwtown, and Coulson were added to the Management Committee.
