NEWS OF THE DAY.

The annual business meeting of the Timaru Mechanics’ Institute will be held this evening. - There should be a large attendance as the president is to have a very pleasing announcement to make. There was an interruption in the north lines on Wednesday afternoon, caused by a tree falling and breaking all the wires about a mile north of Temuka. Mr Reid went out with his staff and managed to restore communication.

Teachers and others interested are invited to meet the Inspector-General of Schools, at Mr Wagstaff’s rooms at 11 a.m. to-morrow, to bear an explanation of the bearings and principal clauses of the new Technical and Manual Instruction Act.

There are some excellent illustrations in this week’s 11 Sportsman and New Zealand Cyclist,” of special interest to lovers of amusements and athletics. The mass of information relating to the world of sport generally is of the usual highly (interesting character.

The annual picnic of the Juvenile Foresters was held yesterday at Gordons Bush. Tt was a tremendous sue css. being lue

largest picnic ever held by tno Lodge. The weather was ;;11 that could be desired, and all enjoyed the outing thoroughly. The party left town in drags at 8.30, and returned ‘at 9.3 Q p.m. The Best in die World —We believe Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy is the best in the world. A few weeks ago we suffered with a severe cold and a troublesome cough, and having read their advertisements in our own and other papers we purchased a bottle to see how it would affect us. It cured us before the bottle was more than half used. It is the best medicine out for colds and coughs.—The Herald. Anclersonville, Ind. Our Makikihi correspondent writes : The weather in the Makikihi district has not been all that could be desired. <De--spite the unsatisfactory weather, however, the crops are looking well, a bad crop being an exception. Heat is much needed to bring away the turnips now being sown. The weather has been so cold that shearing is not at all general. The County Council are making a good job of some of the roads about. The grass is being chipped off the sides and a new crown put on. The usual fortnightly meeting of the South Canterbury Yorkshire Society was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening. Present —Messrs H. B. Kirk (in the chair), secretary, Mr Redmayne; treasurer, Mr S. Smith; and several members. Correspondence was read and received. Two new members were duly elected. A very nice set of chessmen was sent by Mr G. H. Rhodes, to whom a hearty vote of thanks was passed. After a few accounts had been passed for payment the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.

Tho next ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackenzie County Council will be held at the County Council offices, Fairlie, on Wednesday, 28th November next, at 10.15 o’clock, a.m. On the same day, at noon the statutory annual meeting of the Council will be held for the purpose of electing a chairman .for the ensuing year, and also for the purpose of electing representatives of the Council on the Timaru Hospital and High School Boards.

The Timaru Pigeon Flying Club got off a race yesterday from Christchurch for special prizes presented by the club. The weather was the best the club have had for sometime, and the members and their feathered pets have certainly had some queer experiences lately in what is known as the spring of the year. Yesterday the birds were liberated by Mr F. Kingsford, and the club desire to thank him for his courtesy, and also Messrs P. Watson and F. Shirt-

cliffe for once more acting as judges. Twelve birds competed, rep resorting seven owners; and tho winner flew the distance, 95i miles air line, in one hour 56 minutes, a velocity of 1447 yards per minute. The following birds were timed in: —Mr F. Silvertou’s Reflector 1447 yards per minute; Mr J. Bently’s Taipo, 1442 j ; Mr J. Thompson’s Chance, 1414 j ; Mr J. Cameron’s Alpine, 1403. All the birds homed. The next race will be from Culverden. An Ancient Belief. —The ancients believed that rheumatism was the work of a demon within a man. Any one who has had an attack of sciatic or inflammatory iheuma-

tism will agree that the infliction is demoniac enough to warrant the belief. It has never been claimed that Chamberlain’s Pain Balm will cast out demons, but it will cure rheumatism, and hundreds bear testimony to the truth of this statement. One application relieves the pain, and this quick relief which it affords is alone worth many times its cost. For sale by Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association (Ld.).
