Theatre Royal.
The Christchurch Syndicate Kinematograph and Variety Company gave the first of two entertainments in the Theatre Royal last night. The performance commenced with a series of kinematograph pictures, not yry large, but generally of satisfactory clearness, and they were all new. The first was a train of bullock teams driven by Kaffirs, a good film, but run through too fast.' This defect appeared in several cases, but is less objectionable than the reverse mistake, which is more common. The rest were very well timed. This form of judgment being especially noticeable in a picture of a Highland fling. An excellent film showed the landing of Lord Roberts at Capetown. The chief item in this series was a most interesting living panorama of the Paris Exhibition buildings, taken from a steam launch, up one bank and down the other. The pictures were very clear, and the spectators applauded heartily. Indeed, applause was freely given all through the series.. Miss Amy Vaughan sang- a patriotic song, gave a dance, and Mr Baxte\’ sang a song in praise of the Irish Fusiliers at Glencoe, and several comic pieces with good effect.' The second part was opened with a song and dance. Mr Baxter followed with some most laughable absurdities, and was several times recalled. The second series of pictures were also new. Among the most lifelike was a view of bullock teams dragging gun< across the Modder, a review of the tars of the Terrible, and the entry of troops into Johannesburg (with very very few spectators in view). A few comics gave variety to the war scenes. A complete change of programme, both songs and pictures, was announced for this evening.
