Band Contest.
A public meeting, called by the Mayor, of those interested in the Garrison Band going to Christchurch to compete at the Jubilee Contest was held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were eight persons present, the May >r presiding. Mr Hole spoke briefly on the subject. He hoped that the citizens would be as liberal as they could be, and that the band would be successful. He was sure that all would be willing to help. Mr Reid said that the band was making very fair progress indeed. After ( going into the question of expense, he did not expect that it would exceed £6O. The band had not made a call on the public for a considerable time, and did not wish to do so immediately. They "would try to augment the fund as much as possible by giving a concert in the Theatre at an early date. They proposed to make the charges within the reach of all, 2s, Is, and 6d, and call on the public for the balance in subscriptions. It was suggested that the concert be held on the 3rd December, and when the financial result is settled a committee be appointed to canvass for the balance. That course was agreed upon, and the meeting closed.
