THE GERALDINE SPRING MEETING. President—Mr B. R. Macdonald; vicepresident —Mr J. Maling; judge—Mr O. Scott Thomson; starter —Mr C. O’Connor; handicapper—Mr G. Dowse; hon. surgeon —Dr Gibson; clerk of scales —Mr B. R. Macdonald; clerk of course—Mr A. 6. Macdonald; timekeeper—Mr J. Whelan; treasurer —Mr J. Maling; secretary -Mr E. A. O’Malley. The Geraldine spring meeting opened on the course at Orari yesterday. The weather was dull, and as a result the attendance was not extra large. However, it was good for such a day, the was well represented, and a good many visitors went out from Timaru, and Christchurch and Ashburton were fairly well represented. The course was looking its best, and despite the -late showers the going was in fair order. The poor acceptances for the principal races limited speculation, but this had really very little effect on the racing itself, which was on the whole excellent. The chief race was in particular productive of a most exciting finish, the beautifully-bred Clytie getting home after a very game struggle from the rails. . The Flying Handicap was also a fine race, but the old battler could not quite get up. The officials did most satisfactory work, and we have to thank the hon. sec. and particularly Mr B. v Macdonald at the scales for their courtesy. Mr J. Anderson (Temuka) provided a capital luncheon, and Mr Chute did good business at the booth. The totalisator was in the able hands of Messrs Mason and Roberts, and issued £1 and 10s tickets, handling £947 10s. HACK HANDICAP, of 20 sovs; 5 furlongs.
