It is estimated that there were 37,400,000 sheep in the colony bn the Ist September, an increase of nearly 2,000,000 since January Ist. THE CITY COUNCIL BILL. The deadlock between the Assembly and the Council over the City Council Bill lias been arranged. The Assembly concedes the election of Mayor by the Aldermen instead of by the ratepayers, but insists on the extension of the lodger’s vote. EXPLOSION ON BOARD SHIP. MELBOURNE, September 27. The steward, in striking a match in the lazarette of the steamer Tagliaf Erro, caused a serious explosion. The vessel was on her voyage from Port Kembla. The steward was badly burnt. Gas ac-' cumulated in the hold also ignited, and blew the hatches off.
FOUNDERING OP A KETCH. TWO LIVES LOST. BRISBANE, September 27. The ketch Burnett foundered at Burketown in a gale. Twb lives were lost.
Received 1 a.m., September 28th. . DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. HOBART, September 27. Crisp’s timber yard has been destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at about £BOOO.
