MINING.

Per Press Association,

DUNEDIN, April 17,

During the week ended to-day, returns were reported from 30 dredges, the total yield being 7280 z 3dwt Bgrs. or an average of Z4oz per dredge. The Hon. J. McGowan leaves tomorrow on a tour of the dredging claims.

The following notes from Grey Valley (W.C.), are sent by the Otago Daily Times correspondent : —Mining matters at Totara Flat are at present looking very well, more especially dredging, barge areas of ground are being taken up daily in the neighbourhood. “ Your own, in company with a number of gentlemen interested in mining, paid a visit to the well-known Snowy Creek last week. This creek is situated eight or ten miles from Totara Flat, rising in a number of high ranges on the eastern side of the Little Grey River, and after cutting its way through 15 or ZO miles of highly auriferous country, it finally empties into the Little Grey at a point some miles in a northerly direction of the junction of the two Greys. Snowy is a fairly wide creek, and flat: and as there is little timber and no large boulders to be seen, local experts are of opinion that the ground is highly suitable for dredging. A good number of claims have already been taken up by various persons acquainted with the locality. Mr H. Erickson, who is interested in several claims taken up in Bnowy, informs me that he has obtained excellent prospects all the way along the river. While m conversation with the old miners at Snowy, I was informed that most of, if not all, the old residents in that place were of opinion that some excellent claims will be opened up at Snowy in the near future.
