Acclimatisation.

A special meeting of the council of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held at the Grosvenor Hotel on Saturday afternoon. Present-Mr E. Richardson (chairman), Messrs T, Langdon, W. Mendelson, W. G. Aspiuall, M. J. Knubley, and F. Palliser. After routine the special business of the meeting was proceeded with. This was to express an opinion as to the dates for opening and closing the shooting season for native game. - A letter was read from Mr S. A. Bristol suggesting that the season should open on the Ist May and close on July 31st. He hoped that there would not be a close season, and expressed his opinion that there was no/diminution of ducks, the case was rather otherwise.

The Olago Acclimatisation Society asked for co-operation in arranging the opening date for May Ist,

The chairman said that he was advised that the Government intended to open the season on March 31st, as for Canterbury. Mr Knubley thought that this was merely an expression of opinion to a private individual. Members thought it was no use making a recommendation as the matter was always settled without much attention being paid to the wishes of societies. Several recommendations had often been made, but without avail.

After discussion it was resolved that the chairman telegraph to the Colonial Secretary and ask if the opening day has definitely been fixed for the 31st March, and further recommend that it close on June 30th under any circumstances.

The Colonial Secretary forwarded copies of the regulations for netting Mackenzie lakes.

The chairman reported that on Mr Worthington leaving, Mr Miles Campbell had been appointed head ranger as authorised by the committee. The chairman’s action in making the appointment was confirmed. The ranger’s report was read, and the actions he had taken were approved.

Mr Palliser was authorised to have the Society’s boat repainted. The secretary reported that arrangements had been made to open the mouth of the Opihi, It was agreed to vote £SO for the purchase of rainbow trout, to be ordered in drafts for the different rivers.

Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
