He expected it would have realised more. London, February 1. At the tallow sales 1500 casks were offered, and 1125 sold. Prices for all kinds are unchanged. The metal market is strong. Tin 112 ; copper 69| Mr Chamberlain, speaking at Birmingham, said he thought that the abominable sugar bounties would soon be abolished. Mr Reeves is greatly impressed with the success of the direct trade-between Canada and Manchester. Canada is a powerful rival of Australia in the grain, dairying, and meat trades. The question of the establishment of direct trade with New Zealand deserved the attention of the Hon. John McKenzie when he visits England. The South Australian loan realised £94 l?s lOd. There were many small tenders, the largest being £190,000. Received February 2nd, 10.45 p.m. The American visible supply of wheat is estimated at 51,648,000 bushels. The wool sales closed steady, prices being about par with the opening rates. The extreme fates at the beginning and in the middle of the series were not fully maintained. Compared with the December price* merinos were 5 to 6

and one-third per cent, higher, and crossbreds 10 per cent, higher. The total catalogued to date was 173,500 bales; sold to Home buyers 77,000, to Continental 92,000 and to American 5000 (chiefly crossbreds); held over 19,000 bales. The wheat market is slow, with 6d decline on the week. The tallow in stock is 26,867 casks. The imports for the month were 7077 casks, and deliveries 6470 casks. Copper, 70J; supplies, 18,904 tons; deliveries, 20,785; stocks, 26,015. The quantity advised from Australia was 2350 tons. Tin, 113 i; stocks, 22,674; on spot, 7299; afloat, 2069.
