THE BANDS CONTEST.
Per Press Association. DUNEDIN. December 27. The band contest was brought to a close this evening. The bands played the second test piece “Falstaff,” and finished playing about 10 o’clock, but it was 11 o’clock before the judge, Mr J. Otto Schwartz, announced his decision. He said that the Wellington Garrison had gained first prize, Kaikorai and North-East Valley had tied for second place. Oroxford, Dunedin Engineers, 1; C. Davie, Kaikorai, 2. The Wellington Garrison Band having been first on two previous occasions, secure the Besson presentation shield as their own property. At the meeting of the Brass Bands delegates (Lieutenant P. H. Mohr, South Canterbury Battalion Band, Vice-presi-dent, in the chair,) at Dunedin on Wednesday afternoon, the first business was the consideration of the question as to the locality and date of next contest. A letter was received from Timaru extending an invitation to the association to hold the contest in that town next year, and it was unanimously resolved to accept the invitation. It was intimated by the Timaru representative that the probable date of the contest would be some time early in October next. It was decided to recommend Timaru committee to make it a condition that bands taking part in the selection pieces must compete in the quickstep to qualify. It was also decided to represent to the Timaru committee the desirability of confining the solo competition to members of competing bands only.
