Vienna, December 28. Two duels, arising out of the quarrel between Baron BanffyandM. Horansky, have been fought in Hungary. Deputies Karolysis and Fezervary fought with pistols ; the former's pistol failed to explode, and Fezervary’s shot missed. Deputies Gawart and fcfzemeae used swords, and the latter was twice wounded in the head. MR CECIL RHODES. Capetown, December 28. Mr Cecil Rhodes has left on a visit to England; thereafter he proceeds to the Soudan to arrange matters in connection with the Trans-African railway. THE PHILIPPINES. Washington, December 28. Lieutenant Holler, commanding, a battalion of lowa volunteers, belonging to the 6th Artillery Corps, has left for Iloito, in the Philippines, the town having been abandoned by the Spaniards owing to the rebels surrounding it. Received December 29th, 10.30 p.m. The Spaniards evacuated the southern islands of the Philippines with the exception of Zamboanga and Mindanao before the Americans were ready to occupy them. The authorities here suspect that this step was taken in order to increase the complications between the Filipinos and the Americana. Received December 29th, 10.35 p.m. CHILDREN’S MISSON. London, December 28. The Sunbeam children’s mission of South Australia entertained 1000 poor children at Prince’s Hall, Lambeth. Mr H. M. Stanley sent a present, and Miss Ellen Terry sent a thousand pennies for distribution, STARTLING ADVICE. Pretoria, December 29. The Rand Post advises that, in the event of war with England, the women and children and well disposed residents should be given a day to leave the town, then Johannesberg could be converted into a gigantic rubbish heap, and all disaffected persons thrown down mine ■hafts. THE CARLIST MOVEMENT. Madrid, December 29. It is reported in Seville that a number of persons who were suspected of sympathising with the Oarlist movement have been tortured in order to extort confessions. PAY IN THE RUSSIAN ARMY. St. Petersburg, December 29. The Government assign 11,000,000 roubles for increasing the pay of army officers.
