The Caledonian Games.
The directors of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society deserve the hearty thanks of all lovers of sport and the public generally, for having offered for competition at their New Year Sports about £l5O for bicycle racing alone, and all well-wishers will be glad to hear that their enterprise has been rewarded by their receiving entries from the foremost riders in the colonial cycling world. Among them are Middleton, known throughout Australasia; A. Jones, the amateur champion, known familiarly as “Honolulu Jones,” who has defeated such men as W. Martin, Bold and others ; Sutherland, probably the best man in New Zealand ; Barker, Wall, Tierney (of Auckland), Bennett, the Dannevirke crack; the Halls and Bonn, the local champions; Gunthorpe, of Dunedin, the hero of Boxing Day in Christchurch ; Holland, the winner of the £75 New Zealand Wheel Race on Anniversary Day: that beautiful peddler Humphreys ; the speedy Ralston —all these and many mo>e, the cream of New Zealand racing, will extend themselves on probably the best track in this colony, and we confidently expect a record attendance will award the pluck of the society. Nor must it be supposed that any of the other events are to suffer ; the same prizes as heretofore are offered for feats of strength, running, jumping, wrestling and the like; and will this year draw better entries, as Wellington are not holding a Caledonian meeting this year, and many entries are expected from those who usually compete there. In addition there are as visitors the Dunedin Highlanders, who, in all the glory of their magnificent uniforms, will give highly interesting military displays during the day—the bayonet exercise, physical drill, etc. The following are the handicaps for the bicycle races Half-Mile. - Allan Jones scr., Sutherland ser., Barker per., A.
