THE QUICKSTEP.

The annual contest of the New Zealand Brass Bauds Association was commenced to-day witlf the quickstep competition. The five bands assembled in the Octagon and played to the Caledonian ground, where about. 3000 persons were presents Eight bands had entered, but only five competed. The result was as follows: —Quickstep competition test march “The Gladiator” for cash prizes and points in the Besson Shield Competition; bands to be judged on music, marching add drill. Quickstep, *, “ The Gladiator.” First . prize £lO and cup; second £6. Judges —For drill, Majors Jowsey (Timaruj, Robin (Dunedin), and Forrester (Oamaru); music, Mr J. H. O. Schwartz. [The points at Oamaru last year were : —Camaru (the winners), 71 points for drill and 75 for music; Timaru (second), 76 points for drill and 67 for music; Wellington, 70 for drill and 70 for music; Kaikorai, 63 for drill and 57 for music.] THE SOLOS. The quartette competition was taken part in by the Wellington 'Garrison, Kaikorai, Stanmore, Dunedin Engineers, and North East Valley. It is the first competition of the kind. There were only two out of the five entrants in the baritone solo competition, while six took part in the euphonium contest. All decisions were deferred.
