CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. CATTLE.
The yarding of fat cattle (105 headj, though smaller than usual, was nearly all prime beef, there being very little else on oiler. The bidding was extremely keen and a thorough clearance was made at an advance per IOOIbs. A consignment of 12 steers brought £8 5s t- 1 £l2 10s, 14 do from £8 7s 6d to £l2, 12 do from £8 15s to £l2 ss. Ordinary to good steers brought £6 5s to £9 10s, do heifers £4 10a to £9 7s 6d, and cows £4 7s 6d to £7. Per 1031 b extra choice ran from 22s to 24s 6d, prime 18s to 21s, ordinary to good 15s to 17s 6d. SHEEP. 8344 fat sheep were penned, including some extremely prime heavy-weights, all uf which met keen competition, and some of Mr Eriedlander’s Hampshire Down wethers brought 52s 6d. In freezers the very best sorts met keen competition, as did also any really prime heavy-weight ewes, but inferior and unfinished sorts suffered a decline. Prime heavy-weight wethers brought 21s to 30s, best freezers 16s to 20s, medium do 14s to 15s 6d, Inferior and mixed sexes 11s to 13s, best heavy-weight ewes 15s to 18s 6d, medium do 12s to 14s, inferior down to 8s 6d, merino wethers 11s to 17s 4d. The fat hoggets were an inferior lot and sold at from 6s to 10s. The few early Jambs which ca ne forward were scarcely so good as at the Grand National market last year, but they met with good competition. Among them were eight from Mr Washboarn, Selwyn, which brought 15s 6d, selling at from 14s to 245, Store sheep were well represented, the bulk being ewes in lamb, and ordinary store wethers and hoggets. There was no demand for ewes in lamb and only a few changed hands, including a line of 350 six and eight-tooth ewes at 9s 6d to 10s, and others at 6s to 8s 2d, 378 turnip wethers 9s 7d, and 340 two and four-tooth wethers 7s 6d. Hoggets brought from 6s 3d to 7s 3d. PIGS. There was a small entry of pigs, and the demand was scarcely so keen. Porkers averaged 411 to 4^ci, and baconers 4d to 4id per lb. BURNSIDE MARKETS.
DIJNEDIN, August 10, CATTLE.
At Burnside market 180 fat cattle were yarded. A large proportion were only half finished animals. Prime beef was acarce. Competition for all kinds was keen throughout, and when anything good was offered the bidding was very animated. Prices may be quoted at an advance of 10s to 12s 6d upon ordinary sorts, and 15s to 20s per head for anything prime over last week’s rates. Prime bullocks sold at £9 to £lO 10s, extra prime up to £l2, good bullocks £7 10s to £8 10s, medium £6 to £7, light £3 10s to £5, good cows and heifers £6 10s to £7 10a, medium £5 to £6, light £2 10s to £4 10s. SHEEP. There was a very full market of fat sheep, 3470 being penned. Prices opened at about last week’s level, but declined as the sale progressed, and towards the end a decline of fully Is per head had to be accepted for all but prime sorts. Prime crossbred wethers sold at 13s 6d to 15s, extra prime up to 16s (one very heavy sheep brought 19s 6d, but this cannot be considered a quotation), medium wethers 10s 6d to 13s, light 8s tolos6d, prime heavy crossbred ewes 13a to 14a 3d, good do 10s 6d to 12s 6d, medium 9s 6d tolOs, light 7s to 9s. Only 100 fat lambs were in, which sold at current rates. PiGS. Only 33 pigs were penned. Competition was very keen, and the prices obtained were as follows Suckers Sato 12s, slips I4s to 17s, stores 18a to 245, porkers 52s to 335. No baconers or choppers were in.GRAIN. Wheat.—There is no change to report. The market for milling qualities is absolutely lifeless, and the only business passing is in an occasional line of some special description required for milling purposes. In .chick wheat there is no alteration to report. Nominally values are as follows Prime tuscan and red sorts 4s 7d to 4s 9d, medium to good 4s 3d to 4a 7d, prime velvet 4s 8d to 4s lOd, medium to good 4s 6d to 4s Bd, chick wheat (whole) 3s to 3s 4d per bushel (off trucks Dunedin, sacks in ; terms). Oats.—There is a fair inquiry, and prices remain firm at last week’s quotations—good to best feed 2s 2d to 2s 3d, fair to medium 2s Id to 2s l£d, discoloured and inferior is 9d to 2s, milling 2s 4d to 2s sd. long tartarians and duns 2s 6d to 2s 9d per bushel (sacks. extra; net). Barley.—The market remains firm at late rates - prime malting 4s 9d to 5s Id, fair to medium 4s 3d to 4s Bd, feed gnd milling 2s 6d to 3s 6d per bushel (sacks extra; net).
