ENQUIRY.

Per Press Association.

PORT CHALMERS March 14.

Mr Chamberlain collector of customs, opened an inquiry at the Port to-day touching the death of Captain Anderson, as the result of an accident atOuttlee Cove during the Waikare’s Sound trip. The officers of the ship. Captain Strang, Mr Cook, superintending engineer, were examined. Their evidence went to show that the accident was entirely due to the breaking of a defective link in the hydraulic gear, which caused the crane to drop and swing inboard, sweeping the deck. This fault was due to the bad quality of the iron used in the construction of a particular link, which could not have been detected. It was also shown that the ship proceeded on her voyage at the request of Captain Anderson and the injured passengers, and with the concurrence of two doctors aboard. The inquiry was adjourned till to-morrow.
