The Markets.
ADDINGTON MARKETS. (By Telegraph.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 10. At Addington Yards to day there were very large entries and business was hea*lthy. CATTLE. The 143 head of fat cattle was one of the best entries as to quality for a long time. Bidding was fairly brisk and the yarding was cleared at quite up to last week’s quotations—l6a to 18s per 1001 b for prime beef, and 14a to 15s 6d for medium sorts. Prices per head were, steers £5 15s to £8 7s 6d, heifers £4 to £6 15s, and cows £3 12s 6d to £6 ss. Dairy cattle again came forward in large numbers the majority being really good. There was a good demand for springing heifers and all lots were cleared at £5 10s to £7; cows in calf and milk fetching £3 to £6. The yarding of store cattle was one of the best for a long time including some pens of useful two and three year olds. Three year old steers fetched £4 3s, 2£ year ditto £3 ss, 2 year ditto £2 12s 6d to £3 3s, 2£ year-old heifers £2 15s, 2 year do £2 12s 6d, 18 month old cattle £2 2s, yearlings 30s to 335. The sale was the best this season. SHEEP. Between 5000 and 6000 sheep were in the fat pens, the bulk being heavy crossbred ewes of good quality. Best wethers realised Us 6d to 13s 7d, lighter sorts 9s 0d to 11s, light grade mixed sexes 9s to 11s, prime ewes 9s 6d to 11s, extra good to 12s 7d, medium 7s 9d to 9s, merino ewes 4s 2d to 7s, freezing sorts 9s 9d to lls Bd, lighter 7s to 9s 6d, inferior 6s to 6s 9d. Another heavy yarding of fat lambs was on offer, but a large number of scrubbers deteriorated from the appearance of the entry. Better classes held their .own, best freezers selling up to lls Bd. Other sorts were not so easily quitted, those wanting this class haying satisfied their requirements in the store pens. The yarding of store sheep was in excess of last week, all classes being, well represented. Prime wethers sold at 9s 3d to 10s 3d, medium 8s to 9s, mixed sexes 8s to 9s
6d, maiden ewes 9s to 10s, 4 and 6-tooth ewes 8s to 9s 6d, 6 and 8-tooth 8s to 9s, guaranteed sound mouthed 6s 6d to 7s 9d, culls and failing mouthed 2s 6d to 6s, boilers lOd to 2s 6d. PIGS. Pigs were again in heavy supply but contained a number of poorly fed sorts which curers are inclined to fightshyof. Prices per head were baconers 29s 6d to 48s 6d, porkers 15s 6d to 25s 6d, good stores 11s to 15s. BURNSIDE MARKETS, DUNEDIN, March 10. CATTLE. 142 head of fat cattle were yarded, onethird being good to prime beef, A moderately fair demand was experienced for best beef, but bidding for indifferent ! acked animation. The prices ruling showed but little difference compared with last week. Best bullocks sold at £7 10s to £8 12s 6d, medium £6 to £7 2s 6d, light £4 17s 6d to £5 17s 6d, best cows £5 10s to £6 7s 6d, medium to good £4 to £5 7s 6d, light and aged £2 to £3 10s. SHEEP. 2305 fat sheep were penned, all crossbred, the greater portion aged ewes, which were difficult to place. The few wethers to hand had more attraction, but prices for these were also lower by Is 6d to Is 9d compared with last week. The demand was confined to butchers and the sale was one of the most unsatisfactory of the season. Best crossbred wethers sold at 9s 6d to 10s 9d, ordinary 8s 3d to 9s 3d, best maiden ewes 8s 6d to 9s 9I r aged 6s 6d to 7s 9d, light to medium 4s 3d to 6s 3d, PIGS. 133 pigs were penned. Suckers sold at 5s to 9s, slips 10s to 13s, stores 15s to 20a, porkers 26s to 31s, extra heavy baconers 48s to 535. GRAIN. Wheat.—The quantity now offering is more than sufficient for requirements and millers decline to make offers, insisting on the seller naming the price. Quotations are—prime milling velvet 4s Id to 4s 2d, extra do 4s 3d, best tuscan and red 3s lOd to 4s, medium 3s 8d to 3a 9d, inferior 2s 9d to 3s 6d; ex store, sacks weighed in. Oats.—Shippers decline to operate except for immediate requirements, preferring to wait till the market is more fully supplied, when they expect prices to be lower. Sutherlands are quoted at Is lid to 2s, best bright short feed ls9id to Is lOd, medium Is 8d to Is 9d, inferior Is 6d to Is 7d; ex store, sacks extra. Barley.—The market is quiet, but when malsters realise that the supply will barely meet requirements an improvement will doubtless be experienced. Prime malting is quoted at 3s to 3s 3d, extra 3s 6d, medium 2s 6d to 2s Bd, inferior Is 6d to Is 7d; ex store, sacks extra.
