THE SHINGLE QUESTION.

[TO THE EDITOR^] Sir,— With your kind permission I would like to promptly correct the misquotation of Mr J. Talbot, namely;— “Thatone of your correspondents says there is vexation and regret being felt by those who have all along maintained that the shingle will not pass harmlessly, by.” My remarks applied to no party, and expressed gratification instead of vexation or regret. What 1 wrote was;— “ The Board, the engineers, and; the entire community took for granted that thb shingle would not Wave} in

fathoms of water. Since May, 1895, Nature has been giving her reply—rather disappointingly as regards our vanity, judgment, and research, but with gratilyins rosnlts to All well-wishCTS of Timaru and South Canterbury.” I rather admire the foresight of Mr Talbot in now' introducing the “ will not pass harmlessly by” party. That the humour of Mr Talbot’s move may not be lost, let me quote from the chairman’s annual report“ I entertain no hope whatever that any of the material that is too heavy to be carried in suspension will ever pass ‘the entrance until such an amount of shoaling has taken place, as to 'cause an infinity of mischief to the Interests of the port.” I now leave the burning shingle question until after the consulting engineer has reported. / lam, etc., Gentle Reader. Timaru, October 22nd, 1896.
