THE BANDS CONTEST.
THE SOLO COMPETITIONS. (JBt Telegraph. 1 DUNEDIN, October 22. E Flat Soprano Cornet Solo. C. McGlashan, Kaikorai (19 points) 1 S. Oiraino, Wellington points) ... 2 Three others competed. Baritone Solo. F. Forbes, Invercargill City (18 points) ... 1 T. Bartlett, Invercargill Garrison (17 points) 2 THE FIRST TEST PIECE. The contest was continued this evening in the Garrison. Hall when the competing bands played the first test piece “F Puritani.” A commencement was made at half-past 6 o’clock, when there were not many present, but as the evening wore on the hall filled rapidly, and great interest was taken in the playing. Kaikorai opened the proceedings with an even rendering, one of the soloists being rather weak. The Dunedin Navals gave a very showy performance, a feature being the E flat cornet solo. The Dunedin Engineers, Timaru Garrison and Wairaate, which followed, were considered somewhat weak. Stanmore played very smoothly, and are reckoned as not unlikely to gain a place in to-night’s performance. Invercargill Garrison gave one of the best performances of the evening, but faults in cornet playing are considered likely to militate against them. Invercargill City played somewhat unevenly. Dunedin Citizens gave a good performance ; the trombone solo, however, was faulty. Oamaru Garrison cam • next, and -here the trombone solo as played by the conductor (Mr King) was the best of the evening. The performance all through was marked by a great deal of colour. Dunedin Garrison was numerically the weakest of the competitors, and their performance lacked colour. Wellington Garrison were the last to play, and gave a fine rendering, but it was marred by several mistakes by the cornets in the solos. Mr Bulch was judge, and no decision was given, as the prizes are awarded on the playing of the two selections. The Tannhauser test piece will be played to-morrow night. In the opinion of a good many judges Oamaru Garrison is likely to have Sdoited xabtet pbmts so fat,
