Timaru Choral Society.
A public meeting was held last night at St. Mary’s schoolroom to discuss the advisability of forming a Choral Society for Timaru. About 60 ladies and gentlemen were present. His Worship the Mayor presided, and received apologies from the Yen. Archdeacon Harper, Rev. Mr Bcecroft, Mr F. Jones, and a number of ladies and gentlemen who could not be present at the meeting, but were willing to give their support. His Worship iu his opening remarks said that a town like Timaru should be able to support a Choral Society. It was the means of furthering the art of music; it brought out latent talent. Some of England’s best singers had sprung from choirs and choral societies, and he was sure by the numbers present and the talent in Timaru that they would make it successful. Mr Perston proposed and Mr Bold seconded that a Choral Society be formed in Timaru, which was carried unanimously. Mr Tennent spoke in favour of the motion. Miss Jonas proposed and Mrs Warren seconded that a committee of ladies and gentlemen be formed and the following provisional committee was elected. Mesdames Warren, Perston, Foster, the Misses S. Jonas, McLean, Rutherford, Williams, and McLaren, Dr Reid, Messrs Tennent, Gow, Bold, Maine, simpson, Walker, and S. Wolf. Mr N. Perston was elected secretary and treasurer, and Mrs Warren assistant secretary and treasurer. __ After a vote of thanks to His Worship the Mayor the provisional committee held their first meeting, Mr Tennent in the chair, when they drafted rules for adoption by a meeting to be held on Tuesday next, the 25th, when members will be enrolled. The terms of subscriptions were fixed at 10s for gentlemen, and 5s for ladies. The first practice is to be held on Tuesday, March 3rd. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
