The Monowai, with the colonial mails of May 18th, arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on June Bth, being two

days late. The Mariposa with the English mail of May 18th left San Francisco for Auckland on May 31st, due date. The Daily Industry. Mr Mcßwan the dairy expert, has decided to remain in the Government service. Dairy schools are to be opened at Edendale, Southland, and Stratford (Taranaki) for the purpose of giving free instruction to managers and assistants. A butter and cheese factories course will extend over four or five weeks. The Late Fatality. At the inquest on the body of Berber Palmer, the evidence showed that the deceased must have had the gun at full cock, and in taking it up quickly to fire it must have slipped and the trigger caught in some scrub. Deceased’s brother had fixed up a tourniquet on the wound admirably, but Dr Purdy stated that even a medical man could not have saved him with such a wound. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

The Uriwera Natives. Telegrams received by the Government from the Uriwera country state that the recent jeoreros with the natives were satisfactoiy, and the survey is going on quietly. The Tukos were reluctant about the road going beyond Ahikeru, but their opposition was apparently more of a protest than anything else, and as soon as they saw it was no use they gave way. Roads will be laid off between Galatea and Whakatane, and Te Whaiti and Ahikeru. The natives of Ruatuhuna were very determined in opposition at first,but the Hon.Mr Carroll told them if there was any trouble a permanent force would be stationed there, and the Government would let loose the whole of the unemployed on the road between it and Waikaremoana. Not long after they withdrew their opposition. The Hon. Mr Carroll is now on his way to Gisborne via Wairoa. The Midland Railway. CHRISTCHURCH, June 11. Mr Robert Wilson, engineer-in-chief and general manager of the Midland Railway Company, states that the telegram from Wellington that the Manager and other officers had taken service under the Government is not correct. Only the working railways staff and linemen have with his consent joined the Government service. Large Funeral. The funeral of the late Mr A. .1. White yesterday was one of the largest ever seen here. The corteae was about threequarters of a mile in length. Mining. DUNEDIN, June 11. The mine return for the Waipori Deep Lead Company was 57ozs lldwt of gold ; Upper Waipori Dredging Company, 26ozs 7dwt 12grs for 137 hours ; Jutland Flat, Waipori dredge, 19ozs 16dwt, for 144 hours; Sew Hoy Company dredge, 40ozs lldwts 6grs. Man Missing. Fears are entertained for the safety of a man named Campbell, who left Martin’s Bay some time ago to go overland to the head of Lake Wakatipu. At the beginning of last week Campbell’s dog arrived at Greenstone, but there are no signs of the man himself. It is'feared that he perished in the recent snow storm. A search party is being organised, It was Close. The Licensing Bench, on Mr Carew’s casting vote, granted a renewal license to Mrs Braun, who was convicted for selling liquor on the racecourse.
