GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The following concludes our report of the Geraldine Road Board meeting, held yesterday:— The following contracts were let to Orari settlers on the co-operative system: —No. 448, (£24 10s), decided by lot to Messrs Berhens, Bennett, Batty, and O’Neill. No. 449 (£l2 10s) Pearce, Henderson, Payne. George R.Meredith senr. offered to form the road leading to his section at Kakahu Bush for £2o.—Offer too high; work to be tendered for.

Mr A. Pearce was granted permission to enclose a small piece of road adjoining his section at Orari, v.s. Mr J. Ferguson made an offer to form a road to his section. —Accepted. Mr J. W. J ones wrote that he was unable to attend the Board’s meeting re the proposed road to his property, Kakahu Bush. —Received.

The Levels County Council wrote asking the Board to take delivery of three bags of poisoned wheat. —Endorsed “The Board will have to return any wheat in future that is sent out in bad condition.” The overseer was instructed to report on the necessity of planting willows along the bank above the overflow on Beifield road as pointed out by N. Longley, also as to the road being formed adjoining Four Peaks fence as requested by Mr John Campbell, Permission was granted to the Waterrace Committee, Woodbury, to make a small race on the roadside,to the satisfaction cf overseer. T

The chairman tried to read a letter written to Mr Shiers by a ratepayer and intended for the Board’s perusal but did not succeed.

Permission was granted to the Orari-WaihiWater-race Committee to make two fords across Tripp’s road, at Mr Pinckney’s gate, and at Mr C. Henron’s house. Mr L, H.Rooke requested his name to be placed on the rate roll for R. 5.23328 at Hilton, in place of Mr S. H. Pearce.— Granted. . '

Mr Timothy Sugrue wrote that he had made a mistake in the contract for Gilbert’s road, and asked for a return of his deposit.—Mr Sugrue must forfeit one half of deposit. Contractors should be careful to examine work they tender for, W. Taggart, Geraldine, asked that his name be taken from the roll for R.S. 18500.—Mr Findlay’s consent to be obtained.

Several ratepayers at Woodbury petitioned the Board to have the road formed and shingled from corner of section 15108 near J..Mi Barker’s woolshed to first gate next to MrJ.Vane’s.—Overseer to report. Mr E. Stringer was given permission to grub and take away stumps from the reserve near Mrs Bell’s, Geraldine Road, with Mr Mahon’s consent. The Lands and Survey Department wrote that “ thirds ” money would be paid over to the Board to be spent as per approved proposals sent. Mr C. Orbell recommended that Mr W. K. Macdonald’s application be granted for a culvert near his property.— Work to be done when weather is suitable.

Mr W. P Studholme waited on the Board with respect to the road applied for by Mr W, J. Jones at Kakahu Bush. He suggested the possibility of obtaining a satisfactory road by taking a line through Mr Kelman’s section. He also asked that the roadway be improved over Borrel’s hill, and drew attention to the marked spread of wild briar along the roads. Overseer to import on the diversion asked for. The Board also noted Mr Studholme’s warning re the spread of wild briar on roads and riverbeds. Mr Flatman applied for and was granted leave of absence during the next session of Parliament. Mr D. Shaw waited on the Board with reference to a proposed road to Hae Hae Te Moana Gorge. A letter was received that the Government would grant the Board £l5O for works on the Hae Hae Te Moana road by unemployed,—Resolved that ‘ ‘ The Board will undertake the forming of road on the condition set forth in letter from the Department of Lands and Survey and will commence the work as soon as possible.” The pay sheet amounted to £l7B 12s Bd.

The overseer’s report on works completed during the month was read and approved of. —Resolved that the tenant for cottage get notice to quit in one week or pay up. The Board then rose.
