(By Telegraph.) District Court Sentences. PALMERSTON NORTH, June 6. In the District Court, A. F. Laurenson was admitted to probation for six months, on a charge of failing to keep proper books to show his financial position. He was also ordered to pay £25 costs. George Storey, charged with opening a letter, was admitted to probation for twelve months, ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution,and find one surety for £IOO.

The Truck Act. WELLINGTON, June 7. A case was heard in the Stipendiary Magistrates Court in which a firm of timber merchants sued one of their late employees for goods amounting in value to £29 3s 9d, the claim being reduced to £6 14s 9d after allowing a set-off, chiefly composed of deductions from wages amounting to £22 9s. Counsel for defendant submitted that plaintiffs must be nonsuited, as the claim was in contravention of Clause 7of the Truck Act, 1891. Mr Martin upheld this contention, and nonsuited plaintiffs.
