(By Telegraph,") AUCKLAND, May 21/ A number of carpenters, bricklayers, and plasterers (100), through the Hon. Mr Jennings, asked the Premier to adopt the co-operative principle in ; the reerection of the auxiliary - asylum. The Premier said that the proposal would receive favourable'consideration, and instructions would be given to have plans and specifications prepared forthwith. Two natives named. Hereima Heka and Erimiha have been arrested on charges of horse-stealing. James Whitelaw, a bankrupt, has been committed for trial on a charge of not keeping proper books. Bail was allowed., A gum-digger called on Inspector Hickson to-day in regard to the confession of Samuel Evison, as to having caused the death of a young woman at Nottingham in 1882. He states that he is a native of Worksop, ham, and knew Evison since 1863. ; He remembered reading in the papers, about June 1883, of a girl missing from Nottingham, but had not heard whether the body was found. He did not hear any more about her, and did not know her name. He has given to the police information about his and the prisoner’s people, which will be of great use to them in the affair which Evison has divulged. The prisoner comes before the Court to-morrow.
CHRISTCHURCH. May 21. The secretary of the Cyclists’ Alliance has been instructed to write to the Bris 1 bane Club in reference to holding the Australasian championships alternately m Brisbane and New Zealand. Strong objection was taken to several of the’ items in the balance sheet of the last championship . athletic and cycling meeting at Napier. The action of the executive in objecting to a sum of £45 5s 6d was approved. . H. J. Either, amateur champion cyclist of the colony, has been selected by the Pioneer Bicycle Club to compete in the Australasian Cycling ■ Championships at Brisbane in Jurie next.
