Egan, who was convicted of participation in the dynamite outrages in Ireland, has been released from gaol. THE LATE SIR ROBERT HAMILTON. The personalty in the estate of the late Sir Robert Hamilton, ex-Governor of Tasmania, has been sworn at under £12,000 in which the widow is grante a life interest. ' THE WAIKATO. Arrived —Waikato, fram Lyttelton. CRICKET. The Times alluding to Dr W. G. Grace’s continued success' with the bat declares that it assumes the proportions of a nation 1 event. THE WAR OFFICE. The Times suggests that the Commission to enquire into the administration of the War Office should include delegates of great industries, and that in the event of his being in office Lord Rosebery should preside, instead of the Duke of Devonshire.
OBITUARY. Lieutenant-General Feilden, M.P. for Chorley. Dr Honeyman, of Auckland. THE INVERNESS SEAT. May 21. Dr McGregor, the member for Inverness, has resigned his seat in the House of Commons, , owing to the Chancellor refusing to facilitate the Bill for improving the position of the crofters. PRINCELY BEQUESTS. A Bolton lady has bequeathed the sum of £32,000 to each of the British and Foreign Bible Society, the Church Missionary Society, and the Church Pastoral Aid Society. VISCOUNT WOLMER’S CASE. The Vacating Seats Committee have decided that the eldest son of a peer, on the death of his father, is ineligible to hold a seat in the House of Commons. This will probably govern Viscount Wolmer’s case. AN ADMIRAL RETIRED. <. Washington, May 20. The Naval Board have decided on the compulsory retirement of Admiral Mead, of the United States Navy, who publicly declared that he regretted being compelled to remain inactive against the British during the latter’s action in Corinto, Nicaragua. The decision has been endorsed by President Cleveland. THE AMERICAN INCOME TAX.
The Supreme Court has maintained the illegality of the income tax. Five judges opposed the income tax, and four favoured it. The Court held that a direct tax on real estate and personal property could not be charged in accordance with representation. Mr Justice Harlan considered that the decision would injure the authority of the Government in an emergency, relieve wealth, wickedly assault the people’s rights, and might cause national disaster. THE BEHRING SEA. The Government are not willing that Canadian delegates should attend the Behring Sea Fishery Conference here in October next, and will only negotiate with Great Brilain over sealing in Beh ring Sea. APPEAL TO THE VATICAN. Brussels, May 20. The Catholics in Belgium have appealed to the Vatican to condemn the Christian Socialists owing to their propa-’ gating a revolution which is likely to endanger the State. The Pope has summoned Abbe Daeus, the leader, to explain his action. THE LATE EARTHQUAKE. Rome, May 20. The earthquake shocks were also fel at Bologne and Pisa.
