BRITISH AND_ FOREIGN. Per Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Per Press Association. THE MARIPOSA. Sydney, January 21. ; Sailed—Mariposa, for San Francisco via Auckland. HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODS. It has been raining for a week past, the downpour at times being particularly heavy. The northern rivers have overflowed their banks, and the country between Kempsey and Port Macquarrie is under water. At the former place 6 inches of rain and at the latter 10 inches of rain have fallen ince Friday last. THE COINAGE OF SILVER. Mr G. H. Reid, Premier of New South Wales, intends to bring the question of the coinage of silver in Sydney and Melbourne before the Conference of Premiers, which is to be held shortly at Hobart. THE LICENSING QUESTION. Melbourne, January 21. The Licensing Reform Committee which was appointed in Ballarat to collect information as to the Scandinavian and other licensing systems, have forwarded a set of questions to the British Consuls at Gothenburg and Bergen, relative to the Gothenburg system of dealing with the liquor traffic. RIVAL PORTS. For the past year or two trade has been drifting from here, chiefly to Sydney. At a conference between representatives of the Chamber of Gom-i merce and Harbour Trust at which the matter was discussed, it was decided to suggest to the Government that they, should allow a rebate on the wharfage rates with a view of enticing shipping to the port.
