(By Telegraph.) Suicide. AUCKLAND, January 18. Janies Bird, a labourer, committed suicide by hanging himself to a cross beam in a water closet. No cause is assigned. He leaves a wife and grownup family. A Hurricane at Fiji. The s.s. Ohau, from Fiji, reports a destructive hurricane on January 7th and Bth. Great damage was done to property at Suva, Levuka and elsewhere. Many native villages were wiped out. The barque Ophir was wrecked and several small craft lost. The Bishop of Melanesia. NAPIER, January 18. The South Sea mission schooner Southern Cross, Captain Bougard, arrived yesterday morning from Norfolk Island, with the Bishop of Melanesia, who comes to attend the consecration of Bishop Williams next Sunday. The Southern Cross left Auckland a fortnight since for Norfolk Island and was seven days coming from there to Napier, having fair weather anti light winds most of the way. The Napier Drowning Case. At the inquest on the body of Miss Cunningham, the jury returned a verdict that she was accidentally drowned. Frank Glover, the boy who saved Miss McYay, about three years ago saved Douglas Gifford, aged eight, from drowning inNapier Creek, and also saved a lad named Robert Elliott from drowning in the Tutaekuri river two years ago. The jury added a rider to their verdict that Glover’s courage be recommended for recognition by the Royal Humane Society.
Revenue and Expenditure
WELLINGTON, January 18. The Times publishes further figures giving the expenditure at £3,492,636, and the revenue (including balance from last year £291,238, sinking fund debentures, £117,800 and smaller items) at £3,408,463. This leaves a deficit of £148,173. The Otago Central. DUNEDIN, January 18. The Amalgamated Society of Engineers urge the Government to push on the Otago Central without delay to the full extent of last session’s vote. A Good Suggestion. INVERCARGILL, January 18. The Borough Council have decided to communicate with the Government, suggesting that a department be opened in connection with the Government Life Insurance office to cover the liability of employers under the Liability Act. They have taken out the policy with the Accident Insurance Co. for £76 annually, but it was decided not to deduct that amount from the employees’ wages.
