WAIMATAITAI SCHOOL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Waimataitai school committee was held last evening. Present—Messrs Fraser, (chairman) Schmidt, Mason, Borrie, Pringle, Dawson and Glasson, hon. sec. The chairman reported that the entertainment recently held had proved very uccessful in every way, a .substantial amount having been netted. A few small repairs were reported arid Mr Dawson (who was appointed visitor for the coming month) was requested to get them attended to. A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to those ladies and gentlemen, who had so kindly assisted as the concert, to the donors of special prizes, and to the judges. After passing accounts the meeting closed. The followwing are the inspector’s general remarks on the school at the last examination : “ The work of the classes (St. V., VI., andX.,) taught by Mr Wood presented many features of more than usual merit, arithmetic in the sixth standard and to some extent in the fifth, being the only subject to give the scholars any trouble. The excellence of the writing, the drawing and the geography, are specially to be noted, while dictation and composition, and the class subjects generally, are all worthy of commendation. The partial breakdown in St. IV., was mainly due to failures in arithmetic and in composition ; but the class was by no means weak all round, reading, writing, dictation, drawing, and geography among the pass subjects, and the class subjects as a whole giving evidence of careful and successful teaching. In St. 11l the attainments of the children in pass
subjects were rather uneven, but good on the whole. The class subjects had been faithfully taught and the scholars showed up well under oral examination. The only really weak part in the school was St. 11. The work of St. I was generally good, with the exception of spelling. The order, tone and attention of the school are very good.” Of 213 present for examination in standards 172 passed.
