Mias Rose Shappere, formerly of Timaru ban passed her final examination in the Alfred Hospital, Prahran, Victoria, and is now a certificated trained surgical and medical nurse. We believe that Miss E. Shappere is the first Jewess in the colonies who has taken up nursing as a profession.
Seventeen Timaru fanciers entered birds for the Ashburton Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Society’s second annual exhibition, which was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Ashburton, on Friday end Bat m day last; and a consider* able number of prizes were carried off by them. Messrs Bhodes and Perry took first prizes in duckwing game and partridge cochins ; Mr E. Or win 2nd, and Mr J Lillioo third in rilver spangled Hambu-ga; Mr B. 8Watson special, two firsts and a second and third in Andalusians ; Whittaker Bros., first and special in Wyandnttes, two seconds in white leghorns, and J. Lillioo a second in brown leghorns; Mrs Gunnell special and first, two seconds and two thirds in minoroaa | and firsts and special in Orpingtons; Mr A. GK Ennis swept the board in Spanish, putting up a record with two specials, and took minor' prizes in cochins; L. Tracey got two firsts and specials, and two seconds for Plymouth Bocks. In the duck class Whittaker Bros, scored with Pekins; whilst in the selling class for poultry Mr Ennis got a first and special for hie cochins In canaries Mr P. Hooper did unco munly well; taking first and special for cage and four and second and third ptiz a for Norwich clear and .Norwich ticked respectively.
