The Duchess of Sutherland.
The dowager Duchess of Sutherland was released from Holloway gaol on May 29th, and returned to her residence “ The Willows, near Windsor. The same day a deputation of the duchess’s friends arrived at" The Willows ”at two o’clock from London for the purpose of presenting her with a token of their sympathy upon her “ home-coming.” Her grace, however, owing to fatigue, was unable to receive the deputation personally. The testimonial, which was _ left with her grace’s private secretary, consisted of a handsome silver casket, containing the sum of £250 in five Bank of England notes, the following inscription, surmounted by a ducal crown, being engraved upon the lid : “ This casket (with £250, the amount of the fine imposed) was presented on the 29th of Moy, 1893, to Mary Caroline, Duchess of Sutherland, by a number of sympathising English and Scotch friends as an expression of indignant protest against the severe order made by a judge for having unflinchingly carried out a dying request of her husband.”
