AUCKLAND, Mat 10.
A meeting convened by the Chamber of Commerce to consider the question of establishing an institute of accountants was held to day, when it was decided to form such an association, and to communicate with those co cerued in the other chief cities of the colony, with a view of having a general institute.
The news that the law must take its course in the Waikomiti murder case was announced to Scott by the chief gaoler at Mount Eden prison, 'ihe convict who was in the exercise yard, appeared somewhat anxious when called into bis cell, but when told of his fate recovered his self-possession immediately, and gave no further sign of emotion. At the close of a temperance mission at Botorua a prohibition league was formed comprising forty-three members.

It is reported that a systematic scheme of horse and cattle stealing has been carried out on this coast for some time past. In addition to (wo arrests which have already been made three more warrentahave been issued. Walter Gibson was this morning brought before the court and remanded.
MASTER TON, May 10,
Mr Henry Bicbard Low, late of Norsewood, who recently took the Star Hotel here, fell from the fire escape this afternoon, receiving fatal injuries to the head, death being instantaneous.

Mr B. Cook was elected chairman of the Harbour Board to-day. Work for the protection of the breakwater will be commenced in a few days.
WELLINGTON, Mat 10.
Arrangements are being made to open the public library on Sunday. Probate of the will of the late Premier has been granted by His Honour tho Chief Justice to Mrs Ballance.
Colonel Pat Boyle, private secretary to His Excellency, returned from thcj'north by the West Coast express train, benefited in health by his soiourn in the Hot Lakes district. The Union Steam Shipping Company have declared a dividend for the half year at the rote of 6 per cent, per annum. The profits on the half year amounted to £11,429. and after making due allowance for depreciation the balance of £17,907 required for the dividend was made up by a transfer from the insurance fund. It is stated that there is no truth in the statement that the Hon. W. J. Johnston intends to contest the Palmerston seat at the general election. A large meeting of shareholders of the New Zealand Times Company was held today. Pursuant to the judge’s order resolutions were passed removing Mr T. K. McDonald and Mr Jellicoe from the Board of Directors, and appointing Mr M. Kennedy and Mr A. Collies in their place. _ Mr J. flimmer was re-elected. A resolution was also passed that Mr Jellicoe did not possess the confidence of the shareholders. The meeting refused to allow tho company to be bracketed as plaintiffs with Mr Jellicoe, in the action to be brought by him against the directors A resolution was proposed by Mr Russell objecting to the managing director being a Minister of the Crown. It was negatived by a largo majority. Mr Bussell explained that the resolution was not aimed at the Hon W. P. Beeves personally. The meeting was practically unanimous all through, and no proxies were in. Mr Bawers, chief dairy instructor, is about to start on a lecturing tour through Wellington, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay. Nelson, and the West Coast. He is having lithographed plans of creameries, and of butter and cheese factories of various sizes, prepared along with details of the requisites fof’ carrying on the industry which will be found extremely useful to settlers.
DUNEDIN, May 10.
A reply has been received from the Premier expressing Regret that so many men are out of work. The matter is under the considers* tion of the Labour Department, but present appropriations are almost exhausted.
INVERCARGILL, May 10.
The report of the Southland Building Society was the most satisfactory presented for several years past. The number of shares shows an increase of 280 during the year; the properties in the hands of the society have been sold to a large extent, and a dividend of 7 per cent, was adopted.
