AUCKLAND, Nov. 27.

The barque Eotsro, Captain Campbell, of Auckland, is now two months overdue here from Howland Island, and the Central Pacific.

At a meeting of the City Council to-night the mayor announced that arrangements had been made with the MacKelvie trustees to deposit the MacKelvie gift of pictures, etc., in the Auckland Art Gallery until a suitable building can be erected for their reception as required by the conditions of the trust. The bulk of these pictures and articles of vertu are stored in twenty-seven cases in Messrs Brown, Campbell and Co.’s warehouse in Auckland, and the collection is valued at nearly £IO,OOO. A man named Charles Lingard, a seaman on the coasting cutter Muna, has been drowned at Whangapara.

At a meeting of the creditors of Messrs Graham, Pitt, and Bennett, the tender of Mr McKenzie, of Balclutha, for £3911, or 10s 6d in the £, was accepted for the stock. An application to grant the debtors maintenance, was refused.

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 27.

The Admiral and officers of the German squadron entertain a lorge number of _ Wellington citizens at a dance on the flagship on Monday. The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association have arranged to hold a champion meeting at Lancaster Park on January Ist, 2nd, and 3rd. Several loading players, including Mr M. Fenwick, have signified their intention of being present. Entries close on December 24th.

DUNEDIN, Nov. 27.

The Public Art Gallery was opened to-day by the mayor in the presence of about a hundred citizens. The pictures bought from the Exhibition gallery and those left for sale, which have been lent, together with the Art Society’s collection, made a very good show. ■ At Port Chalmers Police Court to day L. H. Bowerman, agent for the Picturesque Atlas, was committed for trial oh a charge of attempting to shoot George Forsyth at Otakau. Bali was allowed, prisoner in £SO and one surety ia a similar amount. The case arose out of an attempt to deliver the Atlps some time ago.
