Suicide of a Native.
GISBORNE, Nov 26. i
A native named Wi Tahara committed suicide by banging. The cause assigned is jealousy, his wife Mersana being missing,

Speaking at Normanby last night Mr Hutchison said he did not authorise his agent to ask for a postponmont of the WhittakerHutchison trial till February, and be did not believe his agent had done so. The application of plaintiffjwas not merely to have the case set down for the 10th because he could have fixed that without reference to the Court, but to have a special jury in Wellington, hearing the ease a few days after tbe
election, as it would be unfair to him. He had no objection to (he case coming on, but merely to the special jury application.
Bishop of Nelson 111
The Bishop of Nelson is seriously ill. On Saturday evening when reading prayers in Bishopdale Chapel ho suddenly stopped, having lost hia sight. Ho is now suffering from congestion of the brain, and the doctors say that under the most favourable circumstances he must have complete rest for three months. No man in Nelson is more popular than the bishop, whose sudden illness has given quite a shock to the community.
The Federal Convention. WELLINGTON. Nov. 26.
Tho determination to fix March 2nd for the Federal! m Convention will possibly prevent New Zealand from being represented at all. Captain Rusaeell can hardly be spared, as all tho Ministers are wanted so near the opening of a session, and Sir W. Filzherbert would find it difficult to attend and be back in time. The illness of Sir George Grey, the third delegate, also complicates the matter. The Government are now considering the position.

Apoplexy
DUNEDIN, Nor. 26,
Mr Henry Allen, who foil down the Athenum steps last week, died in the hospital last night. A verdict was found of death from apoplexy. Mayoral Elect’on- . Keen interest is taken in the city mayoralty election. Indications favor tho return of Councillor Carroll.
